"Nalu" - Therapeutic VR Experience for the Steward Center for Palliative Care in Savannah 2020

Nalu is a Virtual Reality project created for the Steward Center for Palliative Care in Savannah, Georgia. The intention of the project was to provide a relaxing and meditative experience for the patients to use as an alternative for pain killers.

The project was created in Unreal Engine 4

“Nalu” - VR Experience for Hospice Savannah - 2020

Collaborated with a dynamic team of SCAD students as a programmer for Unreal Engine as well as a sound designer using techniques geared for dynamic 360 audio. The project is a Virtual Reality experience designed to provide relief for hospice patients who suffer from chronic pain. The user wears a VR headset and optional controllers and interacts with a changing environment in a vibrant coral reef.

The experience has a day / night cycle that was set up using a series of sequencer events. The overall experience is about nine minutes long and features a variety of both passive and interactive sea life encounters.

I was responsible for the implementation of sound design and music into the project. I did all of the blueprinting associated with triggering sound effects from interactable objects as well as from scripted events. One of my biggest sound contributions was writing a blueprint for simulating different bubble sound effects (at verifying frequencies and modulations) based on the velocity of the VR player's hand, which at the time, was not something the engine calculated on its own, so I had to invent a way to get that information.
